Listening to Today on the radio this morning, I was brought up short. Nicola Stanbridge was interviewing Andy Walter about EMI's "bizarre" world music archives, some dating from the start of the last century.
"Deep the bowels of EMI's music archive in Middlesex are 150 thousand old 78s - gramophone records played at 78 revolutions per minute..."
Although I don't have any 78s myself, I am very familiar with them - and the idea that they have to be explained made me feel very old all of a sudden!

My son asked me once what an album was. I took him up to the loft and showed him all my LP's, he laughed at that term too, all lined up.
My uncle used to make flower pot holders from old 78's. He would warm them and then mould them into shape!

You have to realise Lois, that most geeks of today, would not know what RPM stands for. They should, in my view, as things still turn and are measured in revolutions per whatever. Hard drives and floppy disks were described to me in similar revolutionary terms (when I was learning about computer hardware) for their recording of information, though not necessarily in minutes.
Consider yourself brainy and with it, not agéd and beyond it.
BTW I regret I made flower pots and other designer pieces with some of the 78's I had.
When house clearing not so long ago, an organisation I contacted wanted some really interesting records I uncovered. They couldn't collect and I wasn't in a position to deliver. They've now gone on to the collectors open market via someone who could take them away.
My nephew (22) has a passion for old records. So much so that he even bought himself a wind-up gramophone on which to play the 78s (which makes some of them sound even worse than on my old dansette). He is also gradually filching my collection of 33s and 45s to play on his 1970s music centre (the one I think his mother bought herself out of 18th or 21st birthday money).
He will spend hours enjoying old technology (he's a steam buff too), and has to come round here to use his 81 year old grandfather's laptop when he wants up to date technology.
