I get a weekly newsletter from the local cinema, telling me what films are on. At the bottom, there is this section:

Latest gossip!
- Miley Cyrus Dating Newly Single Cody Linley?
- Mariah Carey Tell-All Book
- Minnie Driver Welcomes a Son
- Michelle Williams Takes a Year Off from Hollywood
- Eva Mendes Hires Life Coach to Deal with Fame
It might as well be written in double Dutch. I don't know who most of these international non-entities are*, and even if I did, I don't care a hoot about their tedious goings-on. It's the same every week.

Perhaps I need to go on a Hello Magazine Appreciation Course so I can take a proper interest in these vital topics And Learn to Write Utterly Fascinating Unnews Headlines Like This?

* I've heard of Mariah and Minnie, but their private lives? Ptui.

It never seems to amaze me that some people are interested in the gossip about what celebs do, it doesn't bother way in any way, most of the time its just a pain in the arse, but some one must buy these magazines such as Hello otherwise they wouldn't pay millions of pounds for the rights to print pictures of their weddings or the first pictures of their new baby.

What is wrong with you - you are a woman after all?

Seriously, I have been tempted into the 'gossip' writing myself, having stood in for an absent scribbler who had a fine line in gossip and celebs.

Made a few bob and, honestly, it was the easiest few pieces I have ever written. Sheer laziness and an ability to write total tripe but in a breathless and convincing way proved the key.

  I think I may be not a proper one though - I am not keen on pink and fluffy, have just two handbags and a few pairs of shabby shoes, and dress from charity shops.
  
  OTOH, I have 2 children to prove my biological status, even if the mindset is a bit odd!
  
  I also write breathless tripe for a client...

I'm with you all the way, Lois.

Even with real celebrities such as Sir Ian McKellan and Dame Judi Dench I don't want to know about their private lives, but just want to enjoy their performances. In fact I would go on to say that knowledge of the private lives of stars can actually militate against appreciation of their work and, with lesser actors than these, might actually spoil my appreciation of, for example, him in the role a father and her as prize bitch.
