How low can you go?

by loiswakeman @ 01/10/2007 - 11:09:49

BBC TV is a wasteland of lifestyle rubbish in the mornings - at least, that is what seems to be the case during my 15-minute teabreak each day.

If you thought 'Omes Under the 'Ammer was cheesy: try Homes Live - on for the first time this morning apparently. Complete with male and female presenters on joky first terms, requisite camp Scots interior designer, and mouthy sales executive, this is presented in an echoing warehouse conversion, with cheap furniture and props plonked into it.

The hallmark of extreme low budgetness was confirmed when they announced the phone-in and there was an embarrassing silence, followed by anguished reassurances of "We do have callers, honestly", and ill-concealed panic. Priceless - as well as very cheap. Just what your MasterCard is for.

I wonder what the Beeb actually spends all our money on? Probably sending correspondents all over the world on jollies, I think.

programmes like this are the equivalent of junk mail and should be outlawed!!

Sorry to jump in, don't know if it's bad manners to crash other peoples' comments. Hope you don't mind, perhaps let me know if it's not 'the done thing' please. So, reason for possible indiscretion, just glad to hear someone else saying junk mail should be outlawed. We get pizza mail Tuesdays which goes direct from the letter box to the recycling box. The loss in income for the Postal Service (what's their name?) would be huge I imagine so something would have to be sorted, but for the sake of the planet, it really should be.
Not as interesting as the bumbling apology really. LOL,C.X.

I always welcome comments. Not bad manners at all.

Do you know about the Mailing Preference Service? It's at http://www.mpsonline.org.uk; also, to lose the unaddressed junk you get from the postman directly, you need to register separately. Write to:

Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Out
Room 130
Wheatstone House
Faraday Road
Swindon
SN3 5JW

or call 08457 950 950, choose option door to door. Press 5 to opt out, and 5 again. They will send an opt out form to complete.

The first works after a few months; haven't tried the second yet.

Thanks Lois. Yes have done the preference bit but have a problem with opting out of the pizza mail as I do wonder what would happen to Royal Mail (just come to me!) if everyone opted out and the government hadn't distributed the cherries fairly. Would hate for it to be an excuse for privatising the mail system. All the best now, C.

Looks like the UCW are doing their best to bring the Royal Mail down as I write. They have not woken up to the fact that we are no longer in the 1970s, and if they cripple the PO any more, most businesses will move away from them as far as they can. Private individuals will resort to sending emails and e-cards - and then where will their jobs be? I am particularly p*@##ed off as my daughter's birthday is next Monday, so she will not get her card and present till several days late (if at all).

I quite liked 'Homes under the Hammer' (or some episodes the first time of showing), and it fitted quite well with late breakfasts in the summer when I wasn't going to work. At least it had the merit of following genuine buyers and seeing their real triumphs and disaters, unlike those awful things where people who clearly have no intention of moving are shown round three or four properties right at the top end of their budget and are expected to select one.

Any programme which starts with people sitting 'live' on a sofa gets switched off in this house.

The first time around - yes. But it's been sliced and diced so many ways now, all we are left with is grey tasteless lifestyle mince! The really funny bit is the links with Mr and Mrs grinning cheesily into the camera from assorted roads and parks.

Just to let you know, Lois: Countryfile just showed the "stone skimming" piece with Juliet Morris again.

I remember not so long ago (well a few months), they showed Ben Fogle taking the 'bus from Brighton to Devil's Dyke. Not only was it the wrong time of year for the special 'bus service, but the fare shown on the front of the vehicle was that from 2003!

I know that since I lived in the Brighton area until last year for over 5 years. I presume that was also a repeat, altho' I never saw the original showing.

I'm a bit fed up of the stretched out video diaries as well.

Hi Duncan - yes, I nearly threw my toast at the telly. It's the third time that piece has been on - grrrrr!
