Chairs to be rearranged...

by loiswakeman @ 16/07/2007 - 14:00:20

... but not on the Titanic*. The View from Seaton reported, on 3rd July, that

"Civic chiefs are to experiment with their seating arrangements at Seaton Town Hall in a bid to improve public participation in council meetings.

They are to rearrange their chairs - currently in a square formation - every three months and then decide which best suits the members of the public who attend their meetings."

Who says that the local news is boring? I bet you wish you lived in East Devon so you could witness the quadrannual funiture shuffling as it happens!

* However, they may be about to blow up the Napoli - which would be real front page news.

At our Parish Council the Chairman and clerk sit with their backs to the fireplace with three councillors at tables at right-angles on either side, next the County and 2 District Councillors sit beyond that with the Police and Neighbourhood Watch representatives and the internal auditor (all of whom will give their reports too the meeting and leave). Finally the table across the end facing the Chairman is for members of the public. Anyone who wants to speak may speak with the chairman's permission. Only the parish councillors may vote. The public (mainly spouses of the councillors) makes the tea half way through the meeting.

Generally it works, and we have achieved Quality Council status.

What's the Napoli ? That horrible building in Ilfracombe would be my first choice.

As to the chairs. If it keeps their simple minds happy and stops them devising more one way plans I'm all for it.

It is the semi-derelict container vessel currently leaking oil (again) off Branscombe, just up the coast from me. It has a broken back, and they tried to use the tide to snap it in two (seems rather crude to me). Didn’t work, so now they may use explosives. Which will be one of the more exciting things to happen here.

They shouldn't move them but play musical chairs instead!

Ah - Mr F - you have probably increased the effectiveness of local government by about 50% at a stroke!

(Speaking as someone who is still waiting for her first successful collection of recyclable waste after about 10 weeks, numerous phone calls and frustrating conversations with jobsworths.)

Our fortnightly recycling collection works too (pastic, paper, cardboard, tins and glass), and we have weekly rubbish collection.

Sometimes I'd rather play musical chairs than listen yet again to the beefs of the councillor who can always be relied on to get hold of the wrong (and mucky) end of any stick - he complains that meetings are too long without seeming to realise that it is he who makes them so.

Your council sounds like a pinnacle of perfection compared to the local district shower! The Parish Council is a bit of a local talking shop though: your chances of getting a planning recommendation seem to depend mostly on who you know.

We do have weekly rubbish collections, but recycling - which seems to work for most, seems impossible to achieve for out little hamlet of three houses. I have seen the collection truck driving along our lane in the past, which is especially annoying.
